Terrence Albury Fishing
Terrence Albury was born and raised in Cherokee Sound on Abaco where fishing is a way of life. Both his father and grandfather worked on crawfishing boats, and it was always expected that he would do the same. Terrence and his brother fish together most days on their 23-foot boat. Depending on the time of year, they deep-sea fish for mahi-mahi, wahoo, or tuna, spearfish for grouper, hogfish, and mutton snapper, and fish for crawfish. Together they have fished for every commercial species of fish in The Bahamas.
Before Hurricane Dorian, they sold the majority of the crawfish to the local fish house and the deep-sea fish to local restaurants and hotels throughout Abaco and the Cays. The demand for seafood was at a peak and their business operated as a fresh-catch business, in which they caught and sold the same day to their customers. Because of increased tourism to Abaco, the price for seafood was at a market high. Today, they have had to shift their business model to direct customer sales since most of the local businesses, including the fish house, were affected by the hurricane.
With WCK’s support, Terrence and his brother will be able to purchase a GPS and 350 lobster traps, which will translate directly to larger revenue. With updated marine equipment, they will save time setting and locating traps. They will also be able to employ more fishermen, promoting sustainable livelihoods and job security for their community. With these new tools, they will be able to sell to at least two new wholesale buyers, which will increase profit and job security.
