What it’s like to work at World Central Kitchen

WCK is a frontline force that shows up with the fierce urgency of now. Applying our model of quick action, leveraging local resources, and adapting in real time, WCK has served more than 500 million nourishing meals around the world.

When disaster strikes, WCK’s Relief Team mobilizes to start cooking and serving meals to people in need. By activating a network of emergency kitchens and community members, WCK serves comforting meals to people impacted by disasters quickly and effectively. To support regional economies, WCK prioritizes purchasing local ingredients to cook with or distribute directly to families in need.

We know that good food provides not only nourishment, but also comfort and hope, especially in times of crisis.

Working here is rewarding, but it is important to remember the challenges involved with a career at WCK.

Flexibility

We do not know when or where the next disaster or crisis will strike, but when it does, it is our mission to arrive urgently to start feeding people. To achieve WCK’s mission of being first to the frontlines to provide meals in response to humanitarian, climate, and community crises, all Relief Team members must be able to travel within a matter of hours, with few exceptions, and the ability to deploy within a matter of hours is an essential function of the WCK Relief Team roles. WCK recognizes that rapid deployment can sometimes impact or disrupt personal plans or engagements (missing out on that concert you purchased tickets for or a friend’s wedding, etc.) but our work is only possible when we have staff available to show up with boots on the ground. This is not a remote work environment.

Resilience

Staff will be working in challenging situations and meeting people who are experiencing trauma. This work requires fortitude and resilience as we show up every day and show our support with a plate of food. There is a beauty in this, but we recognize that face-to-face exposure to people experiencing trauma can be challenging.

We operate in high-stakes, high-stress situations. Staff must remain steadfast and composed in these moments and continue to perform the essential functions of their jobs.

Living Conditions

The weather and environment in which our staff operate can be trying. Staff may experience harsh and extreme weather conditions that they must safely work through. Hunger doesn’t stop for the weather.

Living conditions can be austere. Oftentimes we are activating in places without electricity, running water, functioning sanitation facilities, etc. While we try to provide lodging, there might be times when staff have to sleep in tents, cars, or other makeshift accommodations.

Cultural Sensitivity

World Central Kitchen’s work is dependent on the local community. It is imperative that our team works well with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. All staff must be adaptable, open, and welcoming to people from all walks of life and from all over the world.

Objectivity

WCK is a non-governmental, apolitical organization. WCK expects its staff to exhibit professionalism and respect at all times. WCK does not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or intimidation of staff, volunteers, third parties who work with WCK, or members of the communities WCK serves, including based on political or religious beliefs.

We are a tenacious and fast-paced team that is in the business of feeding people with urgency. Our unique way of operating requires everyone to meet these expectations and way of life.

If this is exciting to you, then we encourage you to visit our careers page or inquire about becoming a Relief Team member or volunteer.
