WCK gets critical food to liberated communities around Kharkiv

September 19, 2022

After six long months of Russian occupation, the Ukrainian military liberated a large region near Kharkiv last week—in total, about 8,500 square kilometers and nearly 400 settlements are now back under Ukrainian control. WCK’s Relief Team immediately jumped in to support communities that have been living under occupation, bringing fresh food and meal kits as soon as it was safe to do so.

The liberation of this region east of Kharkiv is the most significant military gain of Ukrainian forces since pushing Russian forces out of the outskirts of Kyiv in early April. Kharkiv is Ukraine’s second-largest city and has become a focal point for the war because it is only 25 miles from the Russian border. Izyum, a city to the southeast of Kharkiv, is a critical railway hub that acts as a gateway to the Donbas region as well as a center for resupply and aid efforts.
