Relief Team is en route to Japan after powerful quake

January 2, 2024

World Central Kitchen’s Relief Team is en route to Japan to assess food and water needs after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake left widespread devastation.

The powerful temblor rocked communities in the country’s central Ishikawa Prefecture, killing dozens and leaving thousands without power. Rescue teams continue digging through rubble in search of survivors. An estimated 50,000 people have fled their homes in search of safety in nearby shelters.

With its epicenter in the coastal city of Wajima, the quake triggered a tsunami warning that forced further evacuations throughout the region. Fortunately, the warning was lifted today.

More than 30,000 households remained without power as of Tuesday and residents were bracing for possible aftershocks.

WCK Relief Team members are en route to assess the impacted region’s needs for food and water, and will determine if more support is needed.
