Relief Team responds to Hurricane Otis in Mexico

October 25, 2023

The World Central Kitchen Relief Team is in Mexico to assess food and water needs after the strongest Pacific hurricane to ever hit the country caused catastrophic damage.

Hurricane Otis made landfall just after midnight on Wednesday as a Category 5 storm. The National Hurricane Center reports heavy rainfall and flash flooding over portions of Southern Mexico and the danger of mudslides in higher terrain.

Otis slammed the tourist destination of Acapulco and all communication from that region is down, according to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

This storm set a record for the fastest intensification rate over a 12-hour period in the Eastern Pacific, gaining 80 mph during that time.

WCK Relief Team members are on the ground to assess the communities’ needs for food and water, and will determine if more support is needed.
