Chefs For Ukraine

Remembering Igor, a beacon of light, bravery, and hope in Ukraine.

June 5, 2023

Once more, the WCK family is mourning the loss of a friend, team member, and courageous Food Fighter.

On Friday, Igor—a WCK volunteer—was killed when a Russian missile hit his apartment building in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region.

Igor, 60, joined the WCK family through our #ChefsForUkraine response last year and spent months working tirelessly to ensure nourishing meals reached neighbors in his home town, just 3 miles from fighting on the frontline. His wife, also home at the time of the attack, survived the blast.

Volunteers are a cornerstone of WCK’s work around the world. Whether preparing, packing, or distributing food, the efforts of volunteers like Igor bring hope to families during some of the darkest times imaginable. Please join us in remembering this Food Fighter, a true beacon of light, bravery, and hope in Ukraine.

This is not the first time Moscow’s senseless attacks claimed the lives of WCK volunteers. Last July, Russian missiles hit a community center and humanitarian hub in the city of Chuhuiv, also in the Kharkiv region. The community had been under constant shelling for weeks. The deadly strike claimed the lives of Sardor and Viktoria, two WCK friends and brave Food Fighters who helped prepare thousands of meals for families in need.
