WCK en route to southern Brazil amid historic flooding
World Central Kitchen’s Relief Team is en route to the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul to assess food and water needs amid some of the worst-ever flooding to hit the region. Destruction caused by floodwaters has killed at least 150 people and displaced more than 500,000. An estimated 77,000 people remain in shelters across the region and are in need of support.
“The situation remains in a state of emergency and critical because the water levels have not yet decreased,” said Juan Camilo, WCK’s response lead. He and other Relief Team members are on their way to the hardest hit areas of Rio Grande do Sul.
This is WCK’s fourth time responding to flooding in Brazil after leading three other efforts there in 2022. One of the biggest responses was in the state of Bahia, where our team served more than 64,000 meals after intense rainfall led to flooding that broke dams, submerged towns, and displaced tens of thousands of people.
