Ukraine Team brings food and hope to frontlines
Life for many families in Ukraine’s frontline communities has become increasingly tense in recent weeks as Russian forces advance in Kharkiv and Kramatorsk. Communities along the border in Sumy and Chernihiv have also come under increased attack. WCK’s regional teams have adapted operations to meet the unique needs of these hardest-hit communities, providing hot meals, food kits, and water as needed.
We managed to deliver 1,000 food kits to families caught between the fighting in Kharkiv, a place we hadn’t been to in two years. And it’s not easy—there have been rocket attacks, artillery strikes, you name it. But our team keeps going, working tirelessly day in and day out.

In Chernihiv, our team was attending a ceremony in mid April in honor of WCK’s work in the region when three rockets hit nearby buildings, killing at least 20 people and injuring dozens. The team quickly pivoted and was providing meals to residents and first responders soon after. We met Stanislav and his wife at our support tent. He told us they had narrowly escaped the blasts, which shattered windows in their building and covered the area in rubble.
Ukrainians celebrated Easter across the country today. Families living under threat of Russian attack lack basic food and water, let alone the ingredients to celebrate special occasions with sweets. To spread some joy, our team served pasky—traditional Easter cakes—along with our normal meal and food kit deliveries. As always, when we help mark a special occasion with a special treat, people were overwhelmed with joy.
