Operation Safeena: Second WCK maritime aid shipment sails for Gaza
World Central Kitchen’s second maritime aid shipment departed Cyprus bound for Gaza. Today’s convoy of three ships and a barge set sail carrying hundreds of tons of food and heavy machinery to expedite the offloading process and get desperately needed food to northern Gaza as quickly as possible. To date, our teams have provided more than 43 million meals by land, air, and sea to Palestinians facing starvation.
This latest shipment, with enough food to prepare more than 1 million meals, is carried aboard the Jennifer and a barge towed by the Ledra Dynamic. Also part of the convoy is the Open Arms, which will help transport the cargo from Jennifer and the barge to WCK’s pier on the Gazan coast.
In this second maritime shipment we are transporting shelf stable and ready-to-eat items like rice, pasta, flour, legumes, canned vegetables, and proteins. Also being delivered is a special shipment of dates provided by the United Arab Emirates to provide a sense of comfort to Palestinians observing Ramadan during the darkest times imaginable. Dates are traditionally eaten to break the daily fast.
By opening this maritime aid corridor with the support of the United Arab Emirates and Cyprus, we are able to scale our efforts in Gaza and have already delivered almost 200 tons of food to northern Gaza that arrived by sea. While Operation Safeena is getting desperately needed food to hungry Palestinians, the opening of land crossings is the primary way to avert famine.
