Uvalde, Texas is a tight-knit community of about 15,000 people. At Robb Elementary School, students, families, and parents gathered early on May 24 for an awards ceremony where children received recognitions like honor roll and a good citizen award.
The last day of school was just two days away. It’s a time of joy and excitement as kids celebrate moving up and get ready for the summer. But just hours after the ceremony, 19 children and 2 teachers were murdered in the third-deadliest school shooting in United States history.
As the community gathered to grieve, WCK set up a distribution site, mobilizing local restaurants to provide comforting meals, cupcakes, snow cones, smoothies, and fruit. Assisting victims’ families wanting privacy, the Relief Team delivered groceries and hot meals to their homes—during times of tragedy, nourishing meals can be one less thing people have to worry about.

Treats and games for kids
Beyond restaurant-prepared meals, we provided delicious treats like cupcakes, snow cones, aguas frescas, fruit smoothies, and watermelon. At our meal distribution site, a WCK volunteer also brought bubble machines, ring toss, and an outdoor bowling set for kids to play.
Rosa’s
Rosa’s
Many local partners like Rosa’s helped us provide brunch and dinner for families stopping by the WCK distribution site. Menu items included breakfast tacos filled with bean & cheese and potato & egg. As a refresher for the hot heat, the team also made freshly squeezed lemonadas.
Daya’s
Daya’s
Daya’s was one of the first WCK partners who helped us provide comforting relief on hot days as the community gathered to support one another. Setting up at the town square nearby the memorial site, Daya’s served up hundreds of snow cones.
Vincent
Vincent
The hot days didn’t stop WCK volunteers from working hard. 10 year-old Vincent, who just finished fourth grade in a nearby town, came by because he wanted to support the Uvalde community. He helped us label items with WCK stickers and spread the word about free meals. Vincent is excited for summer because he will go fishing, to the beach with his grandma, and won’t have to do homework before starting 5th grade.
