The Cumbre Vieja volcano made history after erupting for the first time since 1971. More than 7,000 residents were forced to evacuate and hundreds of acres of land are covered in lava. In addition to destroying homes, the lava devastated farms which are a major source of economic revenue for the island.
Together with local chefs and volunteers, WCK began cooking comforting meals for evacuees, shelters, and emergency crews. Helping us distribute meals around the island were taxis, Protección Civil, and Correos—Spain’s postal service. With our Relief Truck, we also provided round the clock meals at the 24 hour Emergency Command Center. While the situation has improved, the WCK Relief Team continued providing fresh meals to families unable to return home due to toxic gas levels.
