WCK providing hundreds of daily meals for families affected by Bronx apartment fire
On January 9, an apartment building in The Bronx caught on fire, claiming the lives of 17 people including 8 children. This is the deadliest fire New York City has seen in three decades which left many residents in critical condition and families displaced.
As emergency crews were responding to the situation in the hours after the fire began, WCK immediately called on our restaurant partners in the city to begin preparing hot, nourishing meals. On Sunday night, WCK’s Tyler and Melissa picked up 50 fresh pizzas from Upside Pizza to take to support anyone impacted. Now, working with several partners, we are delivering comforting meals to four hotels housing evacuated families, first responders at the scene, and medical staff attending to injured residents at Jacobi Medical Center.
Yesterday—the morning after the fire—restaurant partners, Beatstro and Tisserie cooked up warm breakfast plates and sandwiches to be delivered alongside coffee and water. A total of five local restaurants are now helping us provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day.
Back at the building where the fire occurred last night, some residents were being escorted into their homes to grab medicine and essential items. Our team made sure to have hot dinners for families going in and out of the building and first responders working through the incredibly difficult situation.
In addition to regularly scheduled meals, this evening our team is providing delicious plates from partner Accra for a group prayer and donation distribution event. To date, WCK has provided over 3,000 nourishing meals for residents and first responders.
The Relief Team is working with community partners to assess further needs and is prepared to provide as many meals as needed. For the latest updates on WCK’s efforts, follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
