First Alert: Relief Team Responds to Northeastern Australia Floods
World Central Kitchen’s Relief Team is on our way to northeastern Australia to provide vital food and water support amid catastrophic flooding. Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate, hundreds going to shelters, as heavy rain continues. Local officials are urging residents to prepare for additional destruction.
The hardest-hit areas of Queensland have experienced more than 4 feet of rainfall, causing widespread power outages and severe damage to critical infrastructure, including major highways. Officials have designated areas around Townsville as “black zones,” advising residents to stay away due to the ongoing risks due to close proximity to the Ross River.
Our team is on the way to the area and coordinating with local partners to deliver food and water to affected communities to ensure families receive the support they need.
This is WCK’s third climate related response in Australia. In 2020, our team was on the ground supporting families impacted by wildfires in southeastern Australia. We also served meals to flood impacted communities in the country’s Northern Rivers region in 2022.
This remains a quickly evolving situation. You can sign up to our newsletter to receive more information and follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for real time updates.
