First Alert: WCK is in North Carolina as historic rainfall leads to flooding
World Central Kitchen’s Relief Team is in North Carolina providing meals and assessing food and water needs after a low pressure system dropped historic rainfall, causing dangerous flooding in several areas. The National Weather Center in Wilmington is calling the slow-moving storm a ‘once in a 1,000 year’ event. Some areas, including Carolina Beach, Bald Head Island, and Southport, reported more than 20 inches of rainfall since the storm began Saturday.
The uncommon nature of the storm’s development caught residents and officials by surprise. Schools had to be evacuated Monday and several roads, including US and State highways, in Brunswick and Columbus counties have been closed or washed out completely, even as evacuation and rescue efforts continue. WCK Chef Corps member Christi Ferretti of Pine Valley Market jumped in to support her community immediately by providing sandwiches, and other local Chef Corps members are on standby to help.
Five years ago, WCK was in North Carolina, serving 300,000 meals to first responders and families forced to evacuate their homes due to Hurricane Florence. Our partnerships in the region have helped us respond with urgency to other disasters, including this one. This remains a quickly evolving situation.
