FIRST ALERT: WCK in Mexico as Hurricane John returns to the southwestern shoreline

September 27, 2024

WCK’s Relief Team is in Acapulco to assist communities impacted by Hurricane John in the state of Guerrero and surrounding regions. After making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on Monday night, John has now reemerged as a Category 1 “zombie storm,” regaining strength and returning to bring even more rain to coastal towns. Some areas have already seen over 20 inches of rainfall in the past week, with an additional 17 inches reported in just the past 48 hours.

Effects of the storm are expected to be felt along Mexico’s Pacific coast through Sunday, with torrential rains, mudslides, and flooding threatening Mexico’s southwestern shore near the resort town of Acapulco. WCK’s Relief Team is on the ground and more staff are on the way to assess community needs for food and water. We will begin distributing meals to families and emergency personnel as soon as possible.

After Hurricane Otis in 2023, WCK provided crucial assistance in this same area. Between October and December, we delivered over 300,000 gallons of water, 5.3 million meals, and 750 tons of dry goods to families recovering after Otis. We’re committed to helping the communities affected by this latest disaster as they face new challenges.

This remains a quickly evolving situation. You can sign up to our newsletter to receive more information and follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for real time updates.

Help us continue supporting communities impacted by Hurricane John.
