As Texas Faces Another Flood Surge, WCK Delivers Meals From Hunt to Leander

July 16, 2025

As central Texas begins to recover from historic flooding, communities there are bracing for more floods and severe rainstorms. Roads are still closed, and continuing storms have caused further flooding. Despite these ongoing challenges, World Central Kitchen is serving hundreds of meals each day to families and first responders. Since July 4, in the immediate aftermath of flooding impacting local communities and summer camps, WCK has provided thousands of meals.

The early July flooding, triggered by intense rainfall, caused the Guadalupe River to rise 26 feet in just 45 minutes. Entire communities were submerged, families displaced, and children at summer camps stranded. In response, WCK delivered hot meals to reunification centers and shelters, including to grieving families from hard-hit areas like Camp Mystic.

In Hunt, the iconic Hunt Store has long been a gathering place for live music and community dinners. Now, it has transformed into a vital hub for food and water distribution.  WCK has served thousands of hot meals here, supporting residents and emergency crews responding to the deadly floods. Restaurant partners have set up operations on-site to prepare comforting, familiar dishes.

“We’re still here,” owner Haley Lehrmann said to NBC News. “All the locals who are still just exhausted at the end of the day are coming here for a break. It’s still the hub.”

“Every person that walks into the store has a memory. And if they don’t have one, they make one.”

By partnering with local chefs and restaurateurs, we make sure meals are culturally relevant and made with care. The Twisted Texican, a food truck from nearby Bandera, is serving Tex-Mex meals with a southern barbecue twist. Some recent favorites include chorizo breakfast tacos, brisket tortas, and chicken fajita bowls.

It’s more than recipes that drive deep community knowledge – local networks and expertise have allowed WCK to reach people quickly and efficiently. With our support, restaurants like Pint & Plow Brewing Company have changed into relief kitchens cooking hot meals.

“We’ve always thought of ourselves as a community hub for our hometown of Kerrville,” said Pint & Plow owner Jeremy Walther, “It was very helpful to have an experienced organization like World Central Kitchen who has been through this kind of event before and that helps coordinate all us restaurants who want to help.”

In the past week, WCK expanded our response to Leander, a city near Austin that became cut off after storms damaged its infrastructure.  Our team is now on the ground, ensuring nourishing meals reach residents in need.

As continuing rainstorms threaten to worsen conditions, WCK is committed to standing with Texans. In popular hubs and isolated neighborhoods, we’re delivering hot meals, clean water, and hope—ready to respond wherever the need grows.
