WCK Responds to Florida Building Collapse
In the very early morning hours on Thursday, part of the Champlain Towers South, a condo complex in Surfside, Florida, collapsed in on itself. In total, 55 units were destroyed at the complex that sits just north of Miami Beach. Eleven people have been killed and 150 people are still unaccounted for as of Tuesday morning.
When WCK’s local team in Florida woke up Thursday morning, they immediately got food trucks on site so emergency personnel and anyone evacuated had hot, fresh food available. WCK has been active in Miami, Florida as part of our pandemic response for over a year, so we have a strong network of local restaurants ready to support any time there is an emergency need.
On Thursday, two of our longtime partners, Ms. Cheezious and Cuban Guys had sandwiches prepared for both responding crews and families displaced by early afternoon. Ms Cheezious served pulled pork grilled cheese and Cuban Guys prepared pan con lechon (roast pork sandwiches) and pan con bistec (Cuban-style steak sandwiches). That night, another longtime WCK partner, Soul Town BBQ, came in to serve dinner. On the menu? Pork chops, ribs, chicken, or snapper served with either yellow rice or peas and rice, and the choice of sides including mac and cheese, green beans, and potato salad.
The search and rescue work that’s been ongoing since last week is incredibly exhausting. Emergency crews rotate throughout the day and into the night. WCK is committed to supporting these teams working around the clock for as long as needed with food trucks available from 11am to 11:30pm each day. Additionally, we remain ready to provide fresh meals to affected families and neighbors currently evacuated. Right now, the estimate is that emergency crews will be on site for at least a month, so we will continue to ensure they have delicious, filling meals to help them continue.
