Food producer network 2020 grantee

Agropek LLC

Agropek is a small farm in Puerto Rico’s south, specializing in herbs, lettuces, and avocados. Its founders, Cindy and Josué, are so dedicated to the growth and success of their agricultural project that they sold their home and invested the proceeds back into the business. Perched on the top of a mountain and surrounded by other farms, they use responsible agricultural practices and operate with zero carbon footprint to protect the aquifer, the environment, and the communities around them.

Agropek is on track to certify its crops as USDA Organic. With the grant, Cindy and Josué will address a water problem that arose after the 2020 earthquakes by installing a system to harvest and reserve rainwater to cover 90% of the water they need. They will also work on a water treatment system that will allow them to reuse the water from hydroponics, which will make the project more sustainable, allow for a greater variety of crops, and create a more precise irrigation system for their avocado trees.
