Food producer network 2020 grantee

Desde Mi Huerto

Desde Mi Huerto is the largest organic seed producer in Puerto Rico. It’s been USDA Organic-certified since 2015 and is well known by the agroecological, school gardening, and home gardening communities on the island. Its seed packages are marketed through wholesalers like supermarkets, directly on the internet, and at events across the island. It also provides educational and volunteering opportunities for students and adults interested in learning more about agriculture. While Desde Mi Huerto’s seeds are sold mostly in Puerto Rico, they are occasionally shipped to the mainland USA and around the Caribbean.

Through this year’s Food Resilience Network grant, Desde Mi Huerto’s second from WCK, the farm will purchase machines for cleaning and packing seeds, as well as new packaging materials. These upgrades will help the operation augment its production by 400%, giving it the capacity to produce up to 1 million seed packages annually.
