WCK Foodie Guide to Puerto Rico
During WCK's relief response in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, we gained tremendous insight into the needs of the local food community. Puerto Rico imports over 85% of its food, making the island especially vulnerable after a disaster. In early 2018, we conducted an agricultural assessment of Puerto Rico and determined that the best way to continue “feeding an island” was by supporting Puerto Rico’s smallholder farmers, fishers, and small food-related businesses.
Our Plow To Plate program aims to increase food security in Puerto Rico by providing funding, training, and networking opportunities to smallholder farmers and businesses that support local agriculture. WCK connects interested Plow to Plate grantees with visitors to the island who wish to volunteer on the farms as a part of the growing agro-tourism industry. We encourage volunteers to then explore all the local community has to offer! Take a peek at our Foodie Guide to Puerto Rico here, and if you’re interested in volunteering with us, sign up here.
