Flooding in Bangladesh impacted millions

#ChefsForBangladesh
Bangladesh | Active from August – September 2024
World Central Kitchen’s Relief Team was in two different regions of Bangladesh after heavy monsoon rains led to devastating flooding. Millions were left stranded and without access to food and water.

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of Bangladesh, over a dozen rivers in the area were well above ‘dangerously high levels.’ Scientists cited climate change as a major factor in the heavy rains this monsoon season in Bangladesh and India.

In 2022, WCK provided 1.6 million meals to communities in and around the city of Sylhet in northeast Bangladesh after historic pre-monsoon rainfall led to the worst flooding in the region in nearly two decades. With the help of local partners, WCK was able to support more than 15,000 families with hot meals and food kits as they recovered from the flooding that year.

Latest from the ground

  • WCK is distributing meal kits near Bhakshimail, Bangladesh. Kits containing more than 30,000 meals have already been delivered to families identified as needing assistance with food and water during our team’s scouting journeys earlier this week. Some kits contain ingredients like puffed rice, powdered milk, and molasses for families who have the ability to cook at home.

  • Max, WCK’s Community Outreach Lead, is on a scouting trip in the Kulaura area of Bangladesh where families are just returning to their homes following monsoon flooding. These villages, normally accessible by land, can now only be reached by small boats. He’s working to identify vulnerable communities most in need of food and water.

  • WCK’s teams navigated difficult terrain in eastern Bangladesh to reach three communities by boat today. Because the flooding is so severe, we will keep using boats to travel to as many impacted regions as possible. While identifying areas of need, we distributed 1,000 meals and bottled water to families affected by the flooding.
