Category 4 Hurricane Ida makes landfall in Louisiana

#ChefsForLouisiana
New Orleans, Louisiana | Active from August – October 2021
With predictions that Hurricane Ida could be the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Louisiana, WCK prepositioned in New Orleans, serving meals as soon as the storm passed.

Ida’s sustained winds of up to 150 MPH left more than 1 million people without power, including nearly the entire city of New Orleans. In the late summer heat, more than a week without power left families in immediate need of food, water, and more.

Even before the hurricane made landfall, WCK’s Relief Team was on the ground, setting up a quick sandwich line and preparing for hot meal production as soon as it was safe. Beginning with lunch the day after the storm passed, the WCK team served hot plates of penne pasta bolognese prepared in our Relief Food Truck to first responders, shelters, and impacted neighborhoods in New Orleans and the surrounding area. Additionally, Chef José and the team took trays of hot meals, sandwiches, and fresh fruit to the city of Houma – right where the eye of the hurricane passed over.

Over the following weeks, the team prepared and delivered hundreds of thousands of meals to communities affected by the storm, ramping down production only when power was fully back on in New Orleans and the surrounding parishes.
