La Soufrière volcano displaced thousands of families and destroyed entire food systems. With a WCK kitchen and support from local restaurants we provided 235,000+ meals to impacted communities.
Erupting for the first time since 1979, the La Soufrière volcano devastated the Caribbean island of St. Vincent—several eruptions followed the initial April 8th explosion sending dangerous ash and debris into the air. Over 20,000 people were displaced. Families who were unable to evacuate the island relocated to the south of St. Vincent where they stayed in shelters or with family and friends.
Shortly after the eruption, WCK arrived to provide hot meals cooked from our Relief Kitchen and local restaurants—together we distributed 8,000 meals a day to more than 50 locations. Purchasing meals from restaurants and sourcing local ingredients for our Relief Kitchen, we worked to support the local economy as the community rebuilt.
