Hurricane Dorian was one of the most powerful Atlantic storms to ever make landfall—the northern islands were hard hit, leaving communities without power, water, and communications for weeks. Arriving ahead of the storm, WCK was the first organization to provide emergency assistance in the Abaco islands.
Led by José, we began cooking hot meals in Nassau – about 80 miles away – that were flown over to makeshift shelters, healthcare facilities, churches, and local neighborhoods in Abaco. In Grand Bahama, we established a second kitchen to provide lunch and dinner to impacted communities. Serving 30,000 daily meals we served more than 1 million meals in just over 5 weeks.
Over the next few months, WCK continued to adapt to the situation delivering meals by land, air, and sea. As our Relief response came to an end, we began to work alongside local families to rebuild the food system—eventually leading to our long-term Resilience support through WCK’s Food Producer Network.
