Cyclone Batsirai makes landfall in Madagascar

#ChefsForMadagascar
Mananjary, Madagascar | Active from February – March 2022
Initial damage from Cyclone Batsirai left the infrastructure of entire communities destroyed and roads to affected areas impassable. Immediately after the storm, WCK’s Relief Team arrived in Madagascar ready to support families with comforting meals.

On February 5, Tropical Cyclone Batsirai hit the east coast of Madagascar, bringing destructive winds and flooding. At landfall, the intense cyclone had the equivalent strength of a Category 3 hurricane, and at its peak maximum sustained winds reached a Category 4 level ranging from 130-156 mph.

This cyclone came just two weeks after Tropical Storm Ana killed dozens of people and displaced many more in the northern part of Madagascar; the southern portion of the country has faced prolonged drought and famine.

Batsirai washed away entire villages, displacing tens of thousands of people. Working with WCK partner organizations and local cooks, our Relief Team provided nourishing meals to families in need.
