WCK Responding in Madagascar after Tropical Cyclone Gezani

#ChefsForMadagascar
Toamasina, Madagascar | Active since February 2026
World Central Kitchen is in Madagascar, where Tropical Cyclone Gezani has struck the island and left a wake of destruction. Families have been displaced, with many people missing and injured. Access to food and water has been cut off for over 250,000 people.

The storm reached Category 4 strength as it approached the city of Toamasina on the country’s eastern coast, with wind speeds up to 143 miles per hour. As recovery efforts begin, WCK teams are working with local partners to ensure families and first responders have access to meals.

This is our second response in Madagascar. In 2022, WCK teams supported communities impacted by Cyclone Batsirai. The cyclone left some communities and roadways completely inaccessible and cut off from food, in addition to leaving thousands of families displaced. Our teams are once again working closely with local partners to provide meals to impacted communities.

Working closely with local restaurant partners and community members, WCK teams have connected with and served thousands of families since the Tropical Cyclone hit. We’re serving traditional dishes to provide comfort to families as they begin the recovery process.

After Tropical Cyclone Gezani slammed into the city of Toamasina, Madagascar, the team at La Fortuna restaurant got to work serving its neighbors. They've served thousands of meals, cooking beloved local dishes for displaced families as food access remains difficult. #ChefsForMadagascar
