WCK supporting families in Myanmar following earthquake

#ChefsForMyanmar

World Central Kitchen’s Relief Team was in Myanmar, where a magnitude 7.7 earthquake created widespread devastation, with many homes severely damaged and families unable to cook. Our team worked with local restaurants and chefs to serve nourishing meals to impacted communities.

In late March 2025, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Southeast Asia, causing widespread destruction in Myanmar. A 6.4 magnitude aftershock caused additional damage. WCK was on the ground in Myanmar, supporting affected families.

We worked with local restaurants and cooks to serve thousands of hot meals each day. In addition, we also provided family meal kits to help fill the gap. We collaborated with partners to expand efforts across impacted areas.

Cooking After the Quake: How WCK Has Responded in Myanmar

When a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar in late March, homes, lives, and jobs were disrupted in the blink of an eye. Access to food immediately became a challenge for families. WCK teams set out to support the most impacted communities, especially those surrounding the epicenter in Mandalay. Over the past month, our teams have been adapting to challenges. They’ve worked nonstop to create partnerships with local restaurants, support the flow of food, and serve over 1.5 million meals to Burmese families.

Partner Spotlight: Step-In Step-Up (SISU)

Our partners at Myanmar-based nonprofit Step-In Step-Up (SISU) are hard at work supporting their neighbors! SISU, which helps young people prepare for jobs in restaurants, hospitality, healthcare, and more, has teamed up with WCK to assemble over 5,000 dry food kits for families impacted by the recent earthquake. Team members have supported their community as volunteers with WCK by packing these kits and distributing meals.

Meet The Family Business Assembling Veggie Kits

WCK is partnering with Daw San San Maw, a local vegetable supplier in Yangon, to provide free produce to families affected by last month’s earthquake. Three generations of women run this family’s vegetable business. Since early April, they’ve packed 30,000 veggie kits for families affected by the earthquake. “It’s hard work,” they say, “but we’re happy to support our community.”

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Shree Ambika Vijay Temple in Mandalay opened its doors as a community kitchen to support local families. A building here sustained damage in the quake, but that did not stop the team here. Volunteers from local organizations prepare 4,000 meals daily focusing on traditional recipes. WCK supports them with equipment and fresh ingredients.

Help us keep cooking for families in Myanmar.
