Heat wave sparks fires across Spain

Wildfires across Spain forced thousands to evacuate, posing more challenges amidst record temperatures. With fresh meals and cold water, WCK supported impacted families and first responders working around the clock.

A majority of the country was under an extreme fire risk and intense heat waves hindered mitigation efforts. First responders battled to contain multiple fires that displaced thousands of people.

In Cáceres, Spain, WCK’s Madrid-based team served ice cream alongside fresh meals for a shelter receiving displaced families. Days after evacuation orders were lifted and people began to return home, another fire in the north-western province of Zamora grew to become one of the largest in Spain’s history.

Our Relief Team moved quickly to bring much needed fuel to first responders working tirelessly. We served up refreshing gazpacho, coffee, fruit, and ice cold water across four multiple cities. We continue to monitor fires across the country and remain ready to assist should the need for meals arise.

  • Earlier this week, WCK’s Relief Team closed out our response to the now contained Moncayo fire in northern Spain. Unfortunately, wind has helped progress the Alicante fire in the southeast. We’re here supporting evacuees and first responders with fresh meals. #ChefsForSpain 🇪🇸

  • WCK’s local Relief Team quickly mobilized to bring nourishing food to first responders containing a second flare up in the province of Ávila. Multiple wildfires are now under control across Spain—since July, we’ve responded to 7 fires, serving nearly 10,000 meals. #ChefsForSpain
