Tsunami waves formed in the immediate aftermath, and strong aftershocks are still causing damage. The initial earthquake destroyed many homes and businesses in Sulawesi. Our teams are working closely with restaurant partners and local community members to serve meals to impacted families.
WCK teams responded in Sulawesi in 2021, when a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the island’s city of Mamuju. Working side-by-side with our local restaurant partners and team members, we were able to connect with the most impacted communities and serve tens of thousands of meals.
Serving Meals to the Hardest Hit Communities
When the earthquake struck Bitung, a coastal city at the north-eastern edge of the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, Muhilda Barumalang and her family did what thousands of coastal families did—they ran for higher ground. Her husband, a wooden boat builder, knows these waters well. When the tsunami warning cleared and they returned to assess damage to their home and workshop, WCK teams were already on the ground with nourishing meals.
