Posadas in Mexico
The holiday season is in full swing in Mexico, and WCK teams are spreading cheer as our efforts in response to Hurricane Otis wind down. Across Mexico, families mark Christmas with traditional parties called “Posadas Navideñas,” usually called “posadas” for short. These festivities take place in the lead up to Christmas Day and include games, singing, sharing food, and piñatas. We were joined by very special volunteers to make our visits to communities fun and jolly—Santa and Mrs. Claus!
In the small community of Amatillo, our restaurant partner El Caporal made 150 servings of delicious pollo con mole with vegetables and rice. Santa joined our team to deliver the meals along with a treat: dozens of bags of candy to share with all of the kids in town.
In addition to the meals and candy that were quickly devoured, we distributed 120 food kits that included both fresh produce and meat, along with shelf stable items and seasonings. These kits were specifically designed to include common items used by Mexican families at the holidays. This way each family who received one can make delicious meals for their festivities.
Piñatas are an important and fun part of the posadas, and WCK made sure to bring some with us. In Laguna del Quemado, our team kept the piñatas as a surprise. They served families hot meals in a large communal space where everyone could sit down and eat together. Once the meal was over, they hung the piñatas and the kids had a blast cracking them open!
In every town and neighborhood we have visited in the last week, our teams have brought the hot, nourishing meals that we are known for. But WCK also prides itself on bringing joy and hope along with food. With Santa’s help, along with adorable piñatas, sweet treats like donuts and candy, and holiday food kits to make special meals, we ensure the families impacted by Otis have a holiday season that is merry and bright.
