Relief Team enroute to Iceland ahead of potential volcanic eruption
The World Central Kitchen Relief Team is on our way to Iceland to assess food and water needs after a state of emergency was declared in anticipation of a catastrophic volcanic eruption.
The volcano, which has been showing increasing signs of instability since last week, led to the evacuation of the coastal town of Grindavík.
Since late October, tens of thousands of earthquakes have been reported in the Reykjanes Peninsula, in the southwestern part of the country. At one point there were as many as 1,400 in a single 24-hour period, according to the New York Times.
WCK Relief Team members are on the way to assess the communities’ needs for food and water, and will determine if more support is needed.
