First Alert: WCK Responds to Major Earthquake in Flores, Indonesia

August 15, 2026

World Central Kitchen (WCK) is responding to a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Flores, Indonesia early on Saturday. Our teams are working to get meals to affected communities as soon as possible.

The quake hit early in the morning local time, sending thousands of residents fleeing to higher ground as authorities issued a tsunami warning—since lifted—following the initial tremor. Two aftershocks followed, including one measuring 6.1 magnitude. Initial reports indicate widespread damage to homes and public facilities across Flores Island.

WCK has deep experience responding in Indonesia, and this is our second this year, and third earthquake response in the country since 2021. Earlier in 2026, WCK responded to an earthquake in Bitung, on the island of Sulawesi, mobilizing to serve meals to affected coastal communities within hours.

This response comes as WCK teams are simultaneously supporting communities in Venezuela and Colombia in the wake of devastating earthquakes, making Indonesia our third active earthquake response at this time. It is also WCK’s second active response in the Pacific, as teams are currently pre-positioning in Hawaiʻi ahead of Tropical Storm Lala.

WCK’s ability to mobilize across multiple emergencies at once is made possible by years of preparedness, deep local partnerships, and a community-first approach that allows our teams to move fast and respond effectively from day one.

This remains a quickly evolving situation. You can sign up to our newsletter to receive more information and follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for real time updates.
