    First Alert: WCK Teams Responding to Fuego Volcano Eruption in Guatemala

    World Central Kitchen’s Relief Team is responding in Southwest Guatemala, where the Fuego Volcano is once again erupting. Lava flows have forced over 1,400  people to evacuate their homes, with an estimated 29,000 people impacted across the region. Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango, and Escuintla are all under a red alert, and pyroclastic flows and ash have blocked roadways. Our local teams and partners are serving sandwiches to impacted families and first responders to provide immediate relief, and we will scale up our operations to ensure nourishing meals reach anyone in need.  

    This is not our first time in the region. In 2018, we served over 300,000 meals to communities impacted by the deadly eruption of the Fuego Volcano. We connected with local farmers, food producers, and restaurant partners, helping establish long-term connections with community members. 

    WCK teams also responded on the border of Mexico and Guatemala earlier this year when a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the region. Almost exactly a year ago, our teams responded to a seismic storm of over 150 earthquakes in Guatemala. We have also responded there during Hurricane Iota in 2020 and Hurricane Julia in 2022, serving thousands of families over the course of both responses.

    • Hi from Sacatepéquez! 🇬🇹 Jesse is at Alimentos y Vegetales Vida—a farm that lost everything during the Fuego Volcano eruption in 2018. With a Food Producer Network grant, owner Carlos built a greenhouse that allows for year-round production and protects crops from pests.
