First Alert: WCK Responds to Deadly Train Collision in Spain
World Central Kitchen is responding to the collision of two high-speed trains near Urda, in the province of Toledo, Spain, along the Madrid–Andalusia rail line. The crash has caused multiple fatalities and injuries, with rescue operations ongoing and the official toll continuing to evolve.
WCK teams are mobilizing from our Response Operations Center in Madrid, with two food trucks and a support 4×4 vehicle. One food truck is equipped to prepare meals on site, while the second is configured for distribution. Sandwiches prepared by our board member chef Pepa Muñoz are ready to support the initial response.
Emergency services are working to rescue passengers and assist people in need. An advanced command post has been established in the affected area to coordinate rescue and medical operations, while injured passengers are being assessed and transferred to hospitals.
“When a crisis like this unfolds, every minute matters. Our teams are mobilizing with food and resources ready to support people affected by the crash,” said Chef Oli, WCK’s Response Director. “We know how important it is to provide food to both the passengers and the first responders working tirelessly to save lives. We’re ready to support local efforts and adapt as needs evolve.”
WCK has a strong network of local partners across Spain, enabling us to mobilize quickly when communities face emergencies. Earlier this year, we responded to the train crash in Adamuz, Andalusia, and more recently concluded our response to DANA Adam, which caused severe flooding in eastern Spain.
Our teams have also supported communities affected by Storm Leonardo in Cádiz and Málaga, flooding in Madrigueras and wildfires across the country. These experiences, together with our local partnerships and response infrastructure in Madrid, help us deliver food quickly to people affected by disasters and the emergency teams working alongside them.
This remains a quickly evolving situation. You can sign up to our newsletter to receive more information and follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for real time updates.
