Food Without Conditions: Ramadan and Always

Help make 7 million meals possible this Ramadan in Gaza

Food is a human right. Ramadan brings hunger into focus and invites reflection and responsibility, grounding the month in feeding others and ensuring families can begin the fast with nourishment at suhoor and gather with dignity to break it at iftar.

In Gaza, hunger is not symbolic—it is daily. And dignity depends on the certainty of food.

Ramadan reminds us that feeding people is not optional or conditional. It is a shared responsibility. World Central Kitchen does not ask who you are, where you stand, or what you believe before serving a meal. We cook. We deliver. We return the next day and do it again.

That reliability is not accidental. It is built into how we work on the ground. Our response in Gaza is centered on cooking fresh meals every day, close to the communities we serve. WCK’s kitchens in Gaza are led by Palestinian chefs, cooks, and volunteers from the community, supported by our teams and partners to prepare and distribute food with speed, care, and consistency.

WCK is close to reaching the milestone of serving one million meals a day in Gaza—operating six large-scale Field Kitchens alongside dozens of Palestinian-led community kitchens, restaurant partners, and bakeries. Together, this network also bakes nearly half a million loaves of bread each day and delivers clean drinking water to families facing ongoing displacement and food insecurity.

But one million meals a day is not the finish line. More is urgently needed in Gaza.

In Ramadan, we aim to deliver 100,000 food kits, so families receive food they can rely on throughout the month. Each kit is thoughtfully assembled with halal, culturally appropriate pantry staples, proteins, grains, oils, and traditional ingredients families use every day, from rice, lentils, freekeh, and pasta to olive oil, chickpeas, tahini, tomato paste, tea, and coffee.

Alongside these kits, iftar boxes include dates, dried fruits, nuts, milk, juice, and familiar Ramadan sweets to help families break their fast with dignity.

Over the course of the month, these kits alone account for up to 7 million individual meals.

This is WCK’s third consecutive year serving Ramadan in Gaza, building on food support that has remained active since 2023. In that time, we have served more than 270 million meals. Even as conditions shift, the need for reliable, community-led food remains constant. Our commitment is simple and unwavering: Food, without conditions. During Ramadan and always.

Ramadan is a time of reflection, restraint, and gathering. It is a month shaped by care for others, by feeding one another, and by showing up with intention. It is also a time when the meaning of food becomes unmistakably clear.

Distributing Zakat is rooted in responsibility, dignity, and care for people. During Ramadan, that responsibility becomes stronger. Hunger is felt more deeply, and the obligation to act becomes clearer.

At World Central Kitchen, Zakat is honored through one clear purpose: feeding people who are struggling. In Gaza, that purpose is urgent, daily, and unavoidable.

WCK held a virtual event that offered an inside look into our Gaza response. Members of our response team joined from the Middle East to share firsthand what it takes to reach and sustain nearly one million hot meals a day in an active and evolving crisis. Watch the video below to get a firsthand perspective on what scaling food relief really looks like on the ground—and why this moment matters now more than ever.
