The quake hit early in the morning local time, sending thousands of residents fleeing to higher ground as authorities issued a tsunami warning—since lifted—following the initial tremor. Two aftershocks followed, including one measuring 6.1 magnitude. Initial reports indicate widespread damage to homes and public facilities across Flores Island.
WCK has deep experience responding in Indonesia, and this is our second this year, and third earthquake response in the country since 2021. Earlier in 2026, WCK responded to an earthquake in Bitung, on the island of Sulawesi, mobilizing to serve meals to affected coastal communities within hours.
Checking In From Flores With Rima
WCK’s Rima and our teams are on the ground serving meals to families impacted by Saturday’s powerful earthquake. The damage to homes and infrastructure is serious, and reaching some of the communities closest to the epicenter takes up to 15 hours by road. We’re expanding our response to reach as many people as possible.
Delivering Meals Via Motorcycle
The recent earthquake in Indonesia has made the road to Bea Mese on Flores Island impassable by car, but nothing can stop communities from taking care of each other. WCK teams navigated the rocky route via motorcycle and were able to reach the area and serve meals to families who have been cut off by the quake.
