World Central Kitchen pre-positioned teams in the southeastern US ahead of Hurricane Isaias’ landfall, which hit communities on the gulf coast in early October.

By working with communities and local partners before the storm hits, our teams were in place and ready to act as quickly as possible the moment it passes—ensuring no time is lost getting meals to the people who need them most.

Pre-positioning teams and supplies is one of the most important tools in WCK’s disaster response model, ensuring that when a crisis strikes, we are already there, with the networks, relationships, and resources communities need to begin recovering immediately. Rather than starting from scratch after a disaster, pre-positioning allows our teams to move the moment it is safe to do so.

In East Brewton, AL, alongside our local restaurant partner Chappy’s Deli, WCK is serving meals to workers cleaning up debris left by Hurricane Isaias. The storm downed trees and left many families without power. Recovery efforts are only just beginning, and WCK is here to ensure anyone in need receives a nourishing meal.

The WCK Rapid Response Mobile Kitchen is up and running in Alabama! WCK’s Ben and our team cooked up chili mac inside our 43-foot-long truck, where they were able to make hundreds of meals in only a few hours for families impacted by Hurricane Isaias this weekend. Many areas in Florida and Alabama are still without power, and residents don’t know when it will return. When families can’t use their own kitchens, we bring the kitchen to them.

After Hurricane Isaias hit East Brewton, Alabama, Reagan didn’t wait for someone else to show up. She joined WCK to help give out hot meals to her neighbors—the same people she’s grown up with, played softball with, built a life alongside.

That’s the WCK way. Local people know their communities best, and when they lead the response, it makes all the difference.
