For months, communities in British Columbia were overwhelmed by both wildfires and extreme rainfall—when the first atmospheric flood hit, many were still recovering from the damage left by fires from the summer. The heavy amounts of water led to mudslides, road closures, and evacuations.
After scouting several of the impacted areas, WCK’s Relief Team identified five First Nations bands, located near the town of Merritt, that were facing shortages and difficulty accessing fresh food. While grocery stores worked to restock and open, WCK distributed organic, Canadian sourced fruit and vegetables for 675 households.
