Relief Team Concludes Flood Response in Spain
World Central Kitchen has wrapped up our response to the devastating floods that struck Spain’s Valencia region in October. Working hand in hand with the community, we served more than 6.2 million meals and distributed over 3.9 million pounds of produce and other ingredients. From day one, neighbors, businesses, and volunteers united to drive the relief effort. We also provided essential tools, including generators, water pumps, and cleaning supplies.
The late October flooding affected nearly 80 cities in eastern Spain, leaving tens of thousands without access to basic necessities like water and electricity. The community played a crucial role in shaping our response, ensuring meals reached every area in need while honoring local traditions. Dishes like paella and fideuà, along with beloved bocadillos, not only provided nourishment but also celebrated the region’s rich culinary heritage.
Volunteers worked tirelessly to support families impacted by the disaster. Their commitment and compassion strengthened community bonds and fueled recovery efforts. Among them was Isabel, a 79-year-old grandmother who immediately stepped up to help her neighbors. She became a symbol of solidarity, saying, “I was born to help, whatever it may be.” Isabel often reminds us that a simple smile can brighten the day of someone who has lost so much.

Local businesses were also vital partners. Restaurants opened their kitchens to prepare meals, while fishmongers, produce shops, and bakeries donated ingredients, allowing us to support both the economy and the community’s spirit. One highlight of our efforts was helping to reopen the municipal market in Paiporta, restoring its role as a hub for fresh produce and social connection.
As our work in Valencia came to a close, we helped families celebrate Epiphany by sharing 2,000 Roscones de Reyes. This traditional dessert, decorated with colorful candied fruits, is a cherished part of Spain’s Three Wise Men celebration. The festive treat brought hope and joy to families during the recovery process.
We are deeply grateful for the solidarity and generosity we witnessed throughout this response. The collective efforts of communities, partners, and volunteers make our mission possible around the world.
