WCK Responds to Hurricane Eta in Honduras & Guatemala
Last week, Hurricane Eta caused immense destruction in Central America, making landfall as a Category 4 storm. WCK’s Relief Team is on the ground in Guatemala and Honduras now, preparing sandwiches and bringing food to people by whatever means necessary.
This past weekend, our team joined one of the many helicopter rescue missions in Izabal, Guatemala, picking up families and dropping off food for others still trapped. Hundreds of people were rescued from rooftops on Sunday and taken to shelters.
With roads still washed out from the flooding, our team coordinated to get meals to isolated shelters by plane. Yesterday, we delivered hundreds of fresh sandwiches and apples to communities in Izabal, where flooding has left many without homes — and access to food.
Today, we’re delivering warm plates of grilled chicken with pasta salad to shelters in the Izabal area.
In San Pedro Sula, Honduras, thousands of people have also been displaced by the hurricane. WCK delivered food and water by boat and truck, working alongside local groups to get more meals to isolated families and to shelters.
We started preparing 2,500 meals at the Hotel Copantl, with help from many local volunteers, and we’ll soon be scaling up to serve 10,000 lunches and dinners each day.
WCK’s Relief Team will continue cooking and serving fresh meals to first responders and impacted communities. For real-time updates about our Hurricane Eta efforts, follow us on Twitter and Instagram.
