First Alert: WCK Responds to Typhoon Bavi in the Northern Mariana Islands

July 4, 2026

Just 10 weeks after Super Typhoon Sinlaku devastated the Northern Mariana Islands, another powerful storm is bearing down on the same communities. Typhoon Bavi is rapidly intensifying and is expected to strike Guam, Saipan, Rota, and Tinian as a Category 4 or 5 equivalent typhoon. A State of Significant Emergency has been issued for the region.

These island communities in the western Pacific ocean remain highly vulnerable. Tinian’s power grid is still not entirely restored following Sinlaku, with its power plant sustaining significant structural damage. The case is the same in Saipan, with more than 11,000 residents still without power. Both islands remain under boil water advisories. Another major typhoon is expected to cause widespread outages that will further impact already fragile water and food systems, compounding the hardship these communities are still working through.

WCK is coordinating with local partners on the ground to start serving meals as soon as the need arises. Shelters across the islands are already open and nearing capacity as residents in government-issued tents are being relocated ahead of the storm. As the preparedness window closes and communications are likely to deteriorate, WCK is positioning to respond the moment it is safe to do so.

This remains a quickly evolving situation. You can sign up to our newsletter to receive more information and follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for real time updates.
