As first responders worked to contain the fire, WCK teams mobilized to make sure people had the food they needed. Our network of local restaurants, including longtime partner Chef Carlos Casillas, cooked for their neighbors.
Local authorities said this was the worst fire in half a century. This comes during a time of increasingly severe wildfires across the world as weather patterns become more and more extreme.
Our local teams recently concluded a response in the province of Almería, where wildfires forced thousands of families to evacuate their homes and caused several fatalities. In 2025, we also served first responders and impacted families during wildfires in the Ávila region.

Wildfire smoke turned the sky orange as fires spread across central Spain.
WCK has expanded our response to four active shelters, along with three distribution points and rural deliveries reaching displaced residents and firefighting hubs. As evacuation orders increase, our teams are adapting to serve comforting meals to families and first responders.
Leire’s Story
When the wildfires in Spain reached the olive groves above Villa del Prado, Leire had minutes to evacuate with her daughter and mother. Roads were closed. Routes kept changing. They finally made it to the shelter at Polideportivo Municipal La Chopera in Villamanta—arriving late, exhausted, and unsure of what came next. WCK has set up a meal site at this shelter, where families like Leire’s are waiting to return home. Our teams are providing hot meals, familiar flavors, and a moment of rest to impacted communities. When everything else is uncertain, food is something we can offer right now.

Hear From WCK’s Chef Pepa on the Ground
Wildfires keep burning across the Ávila region and the Community of Madrid. While the blaze is partially contained, several active fronts remain. Fire crews on the ground and in the air are working around the clock, and today’s improved weather conditions are helping them operate more effectively.
WCK is on the ground across the affected region, serving hot meals, sandwiches, fruit, and water to evacuees and emergency teams at multiple distribution points.
